Armenia 5 Days-05

About Armenia

Armenia is a nation and former Soviet republic, in the mountainous Caucasus region straddling Asia and Europe. Among the earliest Christian civilizations, it is defined by religious sites including the reconstructed Greco-Roman Temple of Garni and 4th-century Etchmiadzin Cathedral, headquarters of the Armenian Church. Another pilgrimage site is Khor Virap Monastery, in the foothills of Mt. Ararat, just across the border with Turkey. A population of almost 3 million people (2013), in an area of 29,743km² and capital Yerevan.

It is a landlocked country with Turkey to the west and Georgia to the north, Armenia boasts a history longer than most other European countries. Situated along the route of the Great Silk Road, it has fallen within the orbit of a number of cultural influences and empires. One of the earliest Christian civilizations, its first churches were founded in the fourth century. In later centuries, it frequently oscillated between Byzantine, Persian, Mongol or Turkish control, as well as periods of independence.

Yerevan, the Capital of Armenia, is marked by grand Soviet-era architecture. The basalt Matenadaran library, housing thousands of ancient Greek and Armenian manuscripts, dominates its main avenue. Republic Square is the city’s core, with musical water fountains and colonnaded government buildings. The 1920s History Museum of Armenia on the square’s eastern side contains archaeological objects like a circa-3500-B.C. leather shoe. It has a population of about 1 million inhabitants. March weather can be slightly cloudy with sunshine or rain and an average daytime temperature of 14° (predicted based on past forecasts).
